Milkshake or Whiskey? This is a hard decision. At Modern Malt you can have brunch inspired cuisine at any time of the day. This snappy modern diner serves up breakfast classics with a major twist. Their french chef concocted a menu (click to read) designed to amuse and delight its patron’s cravings.

Modern Malt serves dishes from the griddle such as the Elvis B-Side, bacon pancakes and bananas with a peanut butter drizzle, or sharable eats like Belly Pops, corn dog battered pork belly with a orange-hoisin reduction and chili aioli. Sandwiches, burgers and waffles are topped with eclectic jams of fig, amber bacon, blueberry-bourbon or strawberry-ginger. Wash it all down with an ice-cold glass of local beer, a peach Bellini, a classy mimosa or cup of Cafe Kubal coffee. Finish your din-unch-fast (dinner, lunch, breakfast) with a creamy milkshake made with local ice cream.

This orange accented restaurant resides amidst Armory Square, the heart of downtown Syracuse, New York. The entrance is located on the right side of the building. As you can see, my family is going the wrong way.

When inside, you are greeted by a Milkshake and Whiskey bar. The rectangular dimensions of this diner-like eatery are bordered by booths with high top tables in the center.

The back wall is lined with windows, featuring the historic reclaimed row of buildings called Armory Square.

My husband is Canadian by birth and recalls having french fries doused in gravy, or poutine, as a child. He was shocked to see this classic on the menu. We had to try it. These french fries were saturated in a peppery bourbon au poivre sauce and topped with New York cheese curds and scallions. Do not hesitate to order this plate to share as an appetizer, it was fantastic.

This is the Big Smoke Portobello Burger with smoked Gouda, fig jam, fried onions and chipotle aioli on a pretzel roll. Modern Malt offers burger clientele alternative options, of either a turkey burger or portobello burger, if red meat does not tickle their fancy. My cousin absolutely raved about this burger, reiterating with every bite how incredible it tasted. She gushed that the sweetness of the fig jam balanced the spicy chipotle sauce.

The Plain Jane waffle tasted like a fresh crisp waffle hot off the press. Honey butter melted across its golden crevices. Each bite was dipped into the stawberry-ginger jam. This is a must try if you are not a foodie dare-devil.

Chicken and Waffles unlike you’ve ever tasted. Bacon waffles and fried chicken with a maple-honey mustard drizzle and a side of spicy cayenne maple syrup. This is for a sweet and savory palate and will leave you wanting more. Order this to share or be selfish, like me, and keep it all for yourself. Either way, you’ll want this in your belly.

Modern Malt is a must-try hot spot in Syracuse, New York. It is perfect for Sunday brunch or those 2 am intoxicated munchies. Leave one of Armory’s bars and stumble on over to Malt. College students no longer have to venture to Denny’s for a late night greasy snack and Stella’s Diner now has some competition.
