When you think of Food Delivery, what pops into your mind? Pizza? Chinese?
Lately, I have been fascinated with the concept of fresh ingredients brought right to your door because it is revolutionizing the way we think of the words “Food Delivery”. Services like Blue Apron, Plated and Hello Fresh offer something uniquely different than prepared fast food dropped off on your porch. They provide the convenience of doing the grocery shopping and measuring for you. They hand you fresh produce with tried-and-true recipes and say, “Now enjoy the fun part of cooking”. Yes, you still have to dice an onion, sear a pork chop, soft boil an egg and roast mushrooms, but isn’t that what you want to hear? This is healthy farm fresh fruits, vegetables and meats delivered to you in a neatly packed box.
Like I stated previously, I have become intrigued with food delivery services as of late. I reviewed the companies Blue Apron, Plated, Home Chef and Peach Dish and compared them all to one another. This past week I had the pleasure to experience and now review Hello Fresh.

The First Impression

The Hello Fresh box of ingredients included three bags, one for each recipe. The icons on each bag indicate what type of meal it is such as seafood, meat and pork. These logos are also found on their associated recipe card, for ease of identification. The meat and seafood were packaged separately.

The Recipe Cards come together in neat pamphlet, where you can tear a recipe out or keep them all together. The front of the card has a final photo of the meal, along with an explanation of the dish’s flavor profile and pictures of the ingredients you’ll find in the bag.

On the back of the card, the top section has a written list of the ingredients, measurements, allergens, tools needed and nutritional information. The rest of the card is dedicated to teaching the home cook how to make the meal with step by step directions and photos.
The Taste Test

This meal was divine. Yes, I took a vibrant looking photo, but the recipe is what made it great. The shrimp arrived fresh, not frozen, and therefore was indicated on the recipe to “eat me first”. So we did. The simple preparation of the gyozas was impressive. All I had to do was chop the shrimp, ginger, garlic and scallions. Then my husband and I stuffed them into the won ton wrappers and pan fried them until golden. The spring succotash was so refreshing. Hello Fresh had me cut the kernels off a fresh ear of corn. This is so different from the times I make chili or tacos and use canned corn. I know, yuck. The soy sauce mixture complimented the gyozas very well, but my husband and I also dipped them in teriyaki sauce.

This pan-seared pork chop with butternut squash and broccolini is very similar to what we eat every night. For this reason, we obviously liked it! No, it was not some fancy new foodie experience, but it was a good staple meal. When I make pork chops, I use the same method as was directed on this recipe. It involves pan-searing the pork chop in oil and then letting it bake on high heat for a few more minutes. This seals in the juices and flavor. I really appreciated that the butternut squash was pre-chopped, as I do not like doing this myself. It takes muscles to slice through a squash. The broccolini and squash were roasted on high heat in the oven as well, making this an easy meal for a weeknight. Lastly, the homemade garlicky sage-butter was an excellent topping for the pork.

This was my favorite meal, which is why I saved the best for last. This dish brings back memories from my childhood. My mom would always make my favorite meal, which was Stroganoff, any time I asked for it. The sauce for this meal is the exact same flavors as my mom’s Stroganoff. Before this meal, I would have told you that I do not like Swedish meatballs. It was not a meatball that I am familiar with, as my Italian Grandma wouldn’t ever attempt to make one. Making it myself helped me realize where those unique flavors come from. The nutmeg and allspice offer that warm zest, which compliment the creamy beef sauce. In my opinion, you can not go wrong with adding earthy porobello mushrooms to a cream sauce. These flavors made this dish sing.
One critique that I have is when I asked someone on Instagram, who had made this meal, how it was, she said it needed more sauce. So I added more water, beef bouillon and sour cream, from my own kitchen, in order to avoid this sauce-tastrophe.
The Final Say

I am a legit foodie. I love to cook, style, photograph and eat food. I would say that I enjoyed Hello Fresh. For this reason, it is a high competitor to Plated and Blue Apron. In our experience of cooking and eating three meals from each company, my husband and I liked all of the meals from Hello Fresh. Whereas, we only liked one or two from the other companies. Also, I was pleased to find that the meat and seafood were fresh, as those from Plated were frozen. Lastly, of all the companies I have tried, Blue Apron still had the most unique ingredients, which is a great feature for someone like me living in the middle of nowhere.
As far as calories go, Plated and Blue Apron boast meals in the range of 550-700 calories per serving. However, Hello Fresh had two of three meals in the 800 calorie range. As health conscious foodies, we do not typically eat fried won tons or creamy noodles, but it was okay to have a treat this week.
Hello Fresh has a big social media network. Even on their recipe cards they tell you to tag your photos with #HelloFreshPics to be entered into a weekly contest. This is a fun community of foodies like you and me. I also liked that on one of the sections in the recipe pamphlet they go over details on how to take a worthy food photo.
When I was looking into Hello Fresh, I doubted that it was going to be up to par with Blue Apron or Plated. The latter companies seem more established and popular. But after giving Hello Fresh a go, I am pleased to say that it was an excellent food delivery company and was my favorite of the three based on the final meals.
Update June 2016: Check out my Reviews of Plated, Blue Apron, Home Chef and Peach Dish to see how they compare to Hello Fresh (click the company’s name).

I wondered what you would think of Hello Fresh, having read your previous reviews of Plated and Blue Apron. I tried them a few weeks ago and also loved all 3 meals that I picked, although there wasn’t the excitement of something exotic, each of them was a recipe that I could see myself making again. I’m trying Plated this week, can’t wait to taste what they have to offer.

My first experience with meal subscriptions came when I saw an episode of “Shark Tank” and they were pitching Plated. I ended up reading some reviews and found that “HelloFresh.com” was getting much better reviews and I had the ability to customize which meals I get each week, and I can easily suspend delivery, so to not get charged a ton of money if I didnt like it. They have this coupon code: SBFSLX that will give you $40 OFF! So you only pay $29 for 6 meals (3 dinners x 2 people). I have stuck with it, and my wife and I enjoy cooking together each week.

Hello Fresh is awful. They sent me some really gross vegetables in my first box. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but the second box didn’t even show up. Waste of money.

HELLO FRESH! Consistent, delicious. On those days I drag myself thru, I mindlessly follow the recipe, a little choppin and basic prep stuff, but mostly pre-measured, and before I know it…….I feel like a champion cook. I can dazzle on better days all by myself. This is as reliable as the milkman of my childhood. Just sayin….

Any gluten free options with any of the home delivery services?

Susan,
I went online and asked Plated.com your question. Here was their reply: While these recipes do not include ingredients that contain gluten, the individual ingredients were processed in a facility that stores and processes items containing gluten. If you have a Celiac allergy, we recommend you use your best judgement based on the severity of your gluten sensitivity.
I could not find the information on Hello Fresh’s or Blue Apron’s website, so I emailed them at contact@blueapron.com and hello@hellofresh.com
When I hear back from them I will let you know! Feel free to email them as well, in case you have more specific questions. Hope this helps 🙂

Susan this was an email I received back from Blue Apron regarding gluten : Many of our recipes naturally don’t contain gluten, however all food is processed in a facility that may contain traces of gluten and we do not have a specifically gluten-free diet plan. If you prefer, you can make simple at home substitutions to help make recipes fit your dietary needs.

My first week with Hello Fresh, the UPS delivery truck was in an accident (no one was hurt) and my delivery was a day late. I contacted Hello Fresh on the day my box was supposed to arrive as I was concerned that my food would no longer be fresh. They gladly refunded the price of the box, even though it was not their fault. When my box did arrive, everything was still perfectly fresh. I contacted the company to let them know, and they told me to enjoy my free box! Great food and fantastic customer service!

Hi Maria!
Thanks so much for your reviews of the 3 food delivery services. We are thinking of trying one of them, but I do have a question. Of the 3, Plated, Hello Fresh & Blue Apron, which one do you think offers the most generous portions? The reason I ask is my husband has a HUGE appetite at 6’4 and 250 lbs., and I have a pretty hefty appetite myself. I am concerned that it is simply not going to be close to enough for us.
Thanks!

Samantha, I laughed because we are in the same boat! I literally eat more than my 6 ft 7 in husband and am always hoping for large portions. We did not have any issues with one company versus another as far as portions go. However, there were a few meals that were lacking in some boxes. For example, in Plated, the Quinoa Stir fry should have been a side because there was no meat. In Hello Fresh, we were full with every meal. With Blue Apron, we did not love the greens and beans meal so we didn’t finish it. I would say get pasta or meat dishes if you are worried about quantity.

I was a Hello Fresh customer for 3 long weeks! Of my three weeks I had only one successful experience because of that I cancelled. This “easy and convenient” service is everything but. I could have thought of recipes and grocery shopped for the amount of time I had spent dealing with these issues. Week one I finally get my box three days late, smelly dripping of chicken juice… To the trash it goes. Second week fine. Third week three days late and sitting on ups truck again leaking of rotten food, I did get refunded for my last box when I cancelled the order. The customer service team was okay not great by anymeans. You have to continue to call them even if they say they will call you back because they don’t call you. They say UPS send you tracking, nope never got it. There are too many companies doing this in the market to have non fresh food delivered to my door 66% of the time and I encourage you to look at a different company in your area and not use HelloFresh or should I say Hello Rotten food. Good Luck!

That redesign might be the reason my “paused” weeks became, well, no longer paused. Having a box show up today when I paused back in December really grinds my gears.
There were several reasons why I paused my deliveries. You sure don’t make that process easy with an overall pause in my membership, but rather leave me to the cumbersome task of logging in every month to stop six weeks at a time.
Any who, the meats in the box could be debated as “fresh”, and the goo and blood that came out of several bags was off putting. I had to wear gloves to get meats out of some boxes (I assume this is why you stopped bagging the vegetables and put things in white boxes?). I had some sirloin steaks show up that were brown around the edges and had purple scaling. Veggies looked like stock that wouldn’t make it in a commercial store, similar to the vegetables most grocery stores will donate to food banks and the homeless. The herbs, though . . . don’t get me started! I cannot ever recall a time that I got ONE bundle of fresh herbs. They are mostly crushed, browned, and looked very dangerous to put in a dish without worrying about a food borne illness.
Many of the recipes will call for kale, but the pictures in the recipe will be spinach and the plate won’t look anything like the ingredients in the box (this was a recent box, btw).
“That does not seem up to our usual standard”
Come on, you know that isn’t true! You guys have 115 complaints — half of them being billing issues — on BBB, and your rating around the web is 1.5/5 stars. 103 of those complaints were closed in the past 12 months!!
Anyone willing to do their research could find a handful of better home meal providers on the net, and I highly recommend it. I canceled my HelloFresh account yesterday and begged Plated to take me back. They made that process easy since really all I had to do was click one button . . . imagine that!

I don’t know about their food, but their sales tactics and refusal to refund my elderly father’s money have left a VERY BAD taste in my mouth.
A sales person from Hello Fresh showed up at my 84 year old father’s door at sundown a few nights ago. Like so many elderly folks, my dad signed up because “he was a nice young man”, which he probably was. My dad (though he has a PhD) did not understand that he would be getting a box of food he’d need to cook and the entrees he’d be receiving were not explained to him clearly. I logged in as him today to find that the recipes were well beyond his ability to cook and worse, that the food contains ingredients that my mother (who has alzheimer’s) cannot eat. Not one single dish for “this week” was something they could fix or eat.
So, I called Hello Fresh to a. let them know the delivery had not been received (after 6:00 p.m.) and to cancel the subscription and the delivery. When I called a man answered the phone, I did not get his name; he said my dad had signed up on the web site, I told him no, someone had come by their house. I was then told the box was out for delivery by UPS and that it would be delivered tonight. I told him my dad doesn’t want it and wants a refund. He put me on hold and a woman came on the line, her name was Tosh. She said that she WOULD NOT refund the money, that she would re-route the box to someone else; I told her if she did that then she had to refund as my dad wasn’t receiving what he’d paid for and that that could be considered fraud. She said we’d have to dispute the charges with the credit card company. I asked her to let me talk to her supervisor, but she said I’d have to call back in the morning – which I will do.
My parents don’t do online things very well. They don’t have a computer at home. Heck, they don’t even have an oven that works (my dad can cook a few things on a gas grill) and we haven’t had the oven repaired as a safety precaution.
So be warned.
I am filing a complaint with BBB if I don’t get this resolved with Alex (the supervisor) tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing Stephen. I was actually planning on signing up with Hello Fresh but after reading your review I’ll do otherwise. Shame on them for pulling that on your Dad. A company who can do that to someone, let alone an elderly person, is no such business that I will be dealing with. I have had enough experiences in the past with other businesses who follow similar “practices”, and have learned that reviews like this do NOT lie. Thanks and I hope you can get your Dad his refund!

I live down the street from this place in Linden, NJ. They have prisoners packing your food. There was a stabbing with a lot of blood last week so be careful the food may be contaminated.
My cousin is a police officer in town and they are at that building at least two or three times a week. I avoid that section of West Blancke street so i don’t get car jacked driving by.
I would NEVER eat their food.

Where does the food come from and where/who is packing it then? I assume you have never opened a box yourself, from home, and could take the claims Hellen has posted as truth.
That’s the unfortunate part.

My experience with Hello Fresh was awful. The meal with salmon was disgusting. My husband and Inboth took one bite and spit it out. This was due to the quality of the salmon. The next meal was chicken and figs. The chicken was rancid — three days after arriving — and the figs were moldy.
Total waste of time and money.

Didn’t have a good experience with Hello Fresh. Had some really smelly salmon, slimy carrots and moldy herbs. This was on two different weeks. I complained and was offered a credit- I would rather have a refund, but didn’t get a response, so I cancelled. I felt the servings were too big, and several meals were over 700 calories. Even getting the two person meal, we had more than enough for two adults and two children.

First of all, GREAT REVIEW! I have had them for 2 months, and my girlfriend and I love getting our box, and cooking together. It has really brought us closer together, and taught us some really cool yet easy recipes. The food is always fresh, and cold, even with the box coming to Phoenix! I used this promo code: CE6HNQ which gave me $40 off my first box.
With that promo code, my first box was only $29, and now I happily pay the $69 each week for the box, and it has been a great experience and HelloFresh really has great customer service.
Happy Cooking!

I’ve had five deliveries from Hello Fresh so far, and all have been excellent. The ingredients were fresh organic. Chicken, steak, pork chops, all beautiful cuts of organic meat. Fresh vegetables and herbs.
I’m not much of a cook ordinarily, so this is just what I needed. I’m feeding three teens and me, so I don’t want anything too exotic. The meals are just delicious.
The food comes in sturdy boxes with eco-friendly wrapped ice blocks, and then wrapped in silver cushioned cool wrap. Ingredients for each meal are in separate boxes The meat is at the bottom of the large box, closest to the ice.
I haven’t had any problems with Hello Fresh. So far, I love the service. .

Do not waste your money on Hello Fresh because they will rip you off. I signed up for Hello Fresh on January 17, 2016 and was supposed to receive my first box at a cost of $63.00 and my first delivery was to be on Janary 25th however because of a snow storm it was supposed to be delayed by 2 days and Hello Fresh customer service said it would be delivered by January 27th. I did not receive my deliver so I contacted customer service and received the following reply:
Whitney (HelloFresh USA)
Jan 28, 13:24
Hello Loretta,
Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. I am so sorry about the delay with your delivery! For this inconvenience, we will gladly place a full box credit in your HelloFresh account. This credit will automatically cover the cost of the upcoming week’s delivery. Our deepest apologies for not living up to our usual standards this week. I have forwarded this information to our courier to make sure this does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Sincerely,
Whitney
However, on January 29th they charged my account $105 for my next delivery – Frbruary 1st. Again a delivery I did not receive so I sent another email on February 1 letting them know I did not recieve my delivery and stated I wanted a refund of my money since I did not get either shipment and I was not to be charged for second according to their previous email. I received a response on Febuary 4th that stated:
Mosi (HelloFresh USA)
Feb 3, 23:15
Hello Loretta,
Thank you for reaching out to us. I apologize for the delay. After looking at your account, I see that you have already been issued a full box credit to your account. Unfortunately, we will not be able to issue a refund.
Thank you,
Mosi
So they have no problem taking money out of my account even though they were not supposed to, but they cannot refund my money since I did not receive my orders. Therefore, I have cancelled my account and will never recommend Hello Freah to anyone based upon the level of customer service I received.

Thank you so much for this review. My husband and I have been struggling with our meals because I always buy the same ingredients at the store, I’ve never been courageous enough to try things like parsnips, couscous, fennel, or arugula… We decided to try a meal delivery service if only to try new ingredients and parings. I researched many and narrowed it down to Plated, Blue Apron, and HelloFresh. 🙂 I picked HelloFresh’s 5 meal omnivore box for two people (the only service that I’ve found that has that option) and we love it. The ingredients are fresh and each meal’s ingredients are already separated and ready to cook. I also love the pictures on each recipe card… (My search continues for a cookbook that has pictures for every meal) The meals are very quick to prepare averaging 30-45 minutes each and the cards teach you how to multitask in the kitchen making each component at the same time (another very helpful feature). I used a coupon on our first box and have the option of unlimited pausing of deliveries. My husband was out of county for a couple weeks and I was able to pause delivery very easily from their app. You do have to pause each box, you can’t just pause the service. There was a missing herb in one of my meals but I just omitted it and the meal was still delicious.
I would dock points for the missing herb and the lack of the option to indefinitely pause the service rather than each individual box but we really do love the service and recommend you to at least try it out 🙂
For those wanting to try HelloFresh my $40 off code can be used on your first box – LNWDN2

This is my second week of HelloFresh and I can say I’m nothing but disappointed. My first shipment was three days late and I had to throw out the shrimp and chicken. Since I used a Groupon they couldn’t refund me. They credited my account so that I would get a free week, which was nice. However, this week my shipment came on time but twoof the ice packs had holes and all the food now has the gel on it. Which if the vegetables were in a sealed container everything would be fine. But they aren’t. All boxes of veggies have the gel in them and all over the food. Yet again my planned meals for my two young sons and I are not happening this week. I’m call customer service and after a 45min wait I got disconnected. I don’t know what to do. I’m utterly disappointed. I feel like this is a sham.

Message from a very unhappy customer
When using Hello Fresh be very carefull that you monitor your paused deliverys, imagine thinking that you have stopped your deliverys only to have £39 taken out of your paypal account and when you call Hello Fresh you are told basically “tough” as it is an opt out service and not an opt IN,as such it is 100% my fault and I will have to pay whatever, you could tell from the customer service girl that I spoke to that this wasnt the 1st time this had happened, it was like she was reading a script, but I suspect that after reading ourther reviews today she has lots of these types of calls as her smugness came across.
To make matters worse Im away next week so wont be in to accept the delivery anyway.
The reason i have paused my delivery for the last 5-6 weeks(thats all you can pause from the screen) is that the family look at all 3 companies that now do Food deliverys each week ( Hello Fresh, Gusto and Marley spoon) and see who has the better menus, unfortunatly for Hello Fresh, Gusto has had the better menus recently (last 5 weeks) , also their service its not an opt out service as you can stop all delivery and then just order when you choose.(unfortunatly for me this is what I thought hello fresh also did)
Hello fresh did have a great customer in me, even though i havent chosen them for a number of weeks, who says that their menus wouldnt have been the best next week… but I won’t be looking at their ever menus again and they have lost any positive feedback or recommendation, after searching through twitter, facebook and various forums today, it seem that I am not the 1st person to suffer, thinking that they had paused your delivery only for hello fresh to unpause it as such i beleive it forms part of their business plan, as many customers looking online suffer the same issues.
unfortunatly good companies dont grow to great companies by using these tacktics.. i suspose their are 60m postential customers that you can upsett before you have no business
I wish you all the best Hello Fresh,
Hello Fresh customers please make sure you check out Gusto as they care about customer service.

Omgosh. You guys, look at their rating on the better business bureau!!!! This company is bad bad bad. I noticed the very few good reviews here seem fishy. They all give the same coupon code. What a scam. I hate companies like this.

My 83 year old mother was called on by a door to door sales person late last night and agreed to a subscription to get the sales person to leave.
My mother then spent a sleepless night and called me early to cancel on the internet.
I was unable to cancel the first delivery online or get a refund.
The product is completely unsuitable for my mother.
I found a similar post above and I think this type of sales operation is totally despicable.

Hi Peter– This is Jordan, the head of our community team at HelloFresh. What you described is absolutely unacceptable, and as a company with integrity, that is not the standard we operate at. Please email my team at communityteam@hellofresh.com, and I will personally make this right immediately. I will also pass this along to our direct sales department, who will retrain the responsible agents. Hope to hear from you soon!

It’s probably worth noting, since this is an early google-result in a HelloFresh reviews search, that HelloFresh has an F rating with the better business bureau. I’m not shocked as I had to file a complaint with the BBB when HelloFresh refused to refund me for a completely untraceable delivery…Keep your loyal readers from making such a pricey mistake with such a dishonest company!

I was a subscriber to Hello Fresh for 3 monrhs. From April to July 2016. Let me first start by saying the food was good. The recipes were easy to follow. Now the bad. (And there is so much bad) my first box was scheduled to arrive on a Monday via ups between 8 and 8. It did not come. I called and they refused to refund. I was offered a credit which I didn’t want. However after much debating I ordered the following week to utilize the credit for a free box. That week the box came a week late. This became the “norm” from hello fresh. When I called (and I called alot) not one customer service agent apologized and empathized or really seemed to care. My credit card was charged for boxes I never ordered. Out of all my deliveries I only received two box’s on time. Several were late and several came days late leaking and unusable. At one point I was hung up on by a rude supervisor at hello fresh. I was contacted by a manager ato one point but was at work when he called so I asked if I could call him back he said that was not acceptable and would call me back but never did. Finally when my last box came late the customer service agent told me well maybe you should pay ups for early delivery. I said NO! I shouldn’t have to; her reply was shall i cancel your service then. Which I did.
I would like to point out that each time the boxes came late I also called ups. Every time they said the same thing that they did not receive the package from hello fresh until Saturday and scheduled for two day delivery and with not delivery Sundays that makes it Tuesday at best. Had hello fresh done what they should have and gotten the order to ups Friday the box would have come on time.
It sad all my complaining fell on deaf ears.
As I mentioned the food was good but as good as that may be does not overpower the horrendous rude pathetic customer service. I also saw on the BBB countless complaints of similar stories. Customer service and satisfaction should be of utmost priority always and hello fresh lost a customer because of it.
I am not with home chef. The meals were shockingly amazing and customer service was wonderful the one and only one time I had to call!!!

I got my first box with 3 meals and recipe book all very nice. Out of 3 recipes only one (Caramelized Veggie Skewers) was excellent. The other 2 (Peach & Nectarine Orzo Salad) & (Jamie’s Sicilian Cauliflower & Chickpea Stew With Fluffy Couscous) where so bad that I ate only once then I trashed them.

Hello Fresh is the WORST! I had a coupon for a discounted week so I used it and then suspended the account immediately. The meals were OK. Four weeks later the account reactivated itself (according to the call center that was in the agreement but how about an email heads up). The red bell pepper in one of the meals was moldy and that meal was a waste. The next week nothing came at all so I thought it was a fluke but I found out it was still billed to me. They said they would discount the meals I never received and that they knew I never received as a “courtesy”. Then, even though the meals were still in their warehouse, they refused to refund a pending delivery. I think they would have charged me for the week I did not receive if I wouldn’t have called even though they know FedEx didn’t pick up that week. This is a SCAM and not worth it at all. The meals aren’t nearly as good as Blue Apron. Phone customer service is TERRIBLE – they would not give me a name or reference number for my phone call. STAY AWAY!!

Hi there all!
I just signed up for Hello Fresh and I LOVE it! I’m finally cooking at home most nights instead of paying to go out for unhealthy prepared meals! I recommend it for sure. I used the code 86F7PB and even got $40 off my first box (code never expires, so you can too!) ^_^
Happy cooking!
