Imagine a world where you don’t have to be rich to have someone do your shopping for you.
I was at a party a while back and chatted with a woman about our shopping practices. The conversation started with her complimenting my attire. “Oh, I like your dress.” “Thanks, it’s from Forever 21.” I went on to ask where she got her heels. “Nordstrom. I hate to shop so I hire someone else to shop for me.” Yep. Not me. My shopping experiences entail persistence, sweating and several hours in the dressing room, only to be able to select two articles of clothing, due to my budget.
Some of you may be like me. You would LOVE to be catered to and hire a personal shopper, but you lack the cash. Although I do not have a resolution for clothes shopping, I do have one for grocery shopping! Enter Food Delivery Services.
Since 2012 Blue Apron, Hello Fresh and Plated have pampered their patrons with food delivered right to their doorstep. In 2013 Home Chef came onto the scene, offering similar services. Luckily for you, I have tried and reviewed (click names to read) Blue Apron, Plated, Hello Fresh, Peach Dish. Now I have the opportunity to review Home Chef and compare it to all of these companies, so that you can make an educated decision as to which one best serves your family’s needs.

The First Impression

A small square box arrived around 4:00 on a Wednesday night. The ingredients were organized in three separate bags, with labels identifying the recipe’s name. The meat was packaged in vacuumed sealed bags and remained separated from the recipe bags. Within each bag, the ingredients were pre-portioned and labeled in their own designated container or bag. The fresh fruit and vegetables were whole and preparation directions were outlined clearly on the recipe card. Above is an example of the Cuban-Style Pork Chop ingredients that were removed from their bag.

Each meal has a recipe card. The front of the recipe card has a final photo of the meal, along with an explanation of the dish’s flavor profile and a picture of the chef who created the dish.

On the back of the card, the top section has a written list of the ingredients, measurements, what you’ll need (like salt and pepper), preparation time, calories per serving and other dietary information. It also includes a drink pairing suggestion, which is unique to Home Chef only. The rest of the card is dedicated to teaching the home cook how to make the meal with step-by-step directions and photos. The last photo describes how to plate the dish.
The Taste Test

Thai Fish Cakes with Cilantro-Lime Slaw | This was an incredible low-calorie meal that was bursting with flavor. Fresh ginger, fish sauce, cilantro and chili powder took me on a journey to Thailand. The fillets of Tilapia were first roasted, then shredded and lastly pan-seared to create a crunchy exterior. The finishing sauce was Sriracha, for those of us who like it spicy! The Cilantro-Lime Slaw was crunchy and refreshing, complementing the tender fish cakes. After eating this dish, I immediately tucked away the recipe so that I could create it again. The ingredients such as panko, lime, mayonnaise and garlic are simple, but when combined, the punch of flavor will shock you. This recipe was only 521 calories per serving. Yet ours was less, as I substituted regular mayonnaise for low-fat mayo found in our refrigerator. Each of us had two huge fish cakes, which were appropriately filling. The drink pairing for this meal was chilled Thai beer, Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc.
Con: None.

Hearty Steak and Goat Cheese Salad with Champagne Vinaigrette and Pepitas | This was a substantial salad. The tender sirloin steaks, cooked to medium-rare, melted in our mouths. The goat cheese added a zing of creaminess, while the shallots offered a hit of garlicky flavor. The Champagne Vinaigrette was another recipe that you had to make yourself. For me, this was my favorite part because there is nothing like fresh homemade dressing. This dressing included Dijon mustard, champagne vinegar, olive oil, sugar, salt and pepper. It was light and flavorful with a burst of acidity. At only 677 calories per serving, my husband and I were extremely full without the guilt. The drink pairing suggestions included Pinot Noir, Cabernet or Chilled Chardonnay.
Con: Yes, this is a salad that you can easily make on your own without the help of a food delivery service or recipe. It was one of many that I could choose from, but knowing that we wanted a low-carb meal, I chose according to our diets.

Cuban-Style Pork Chop with Ensalada de Aguacate and Citrus-Caramelized Onions | This was another hearty and healthy meal. The Cuban-Style Pork Chop was marinated in an orange juice and citrus blend that complimented the smoky sear from a prepared spice blend. Ensalada de Aguacate is Spanish for Avocado Salad. The baby arugula was delightful in this salad, as it added a peppery bite. Lastly, we enjoyed the caramelized onions because they were sauteed with the orange-citrus marinade that was also used for the pork. This meal was 501 calories per serving and its drink pairings include Cuban-style beer or rum cocktails.
Con: The salad only had a squeeze of lime to dress it, so I added extra virgin olive oil and reduced balsamic vinegar. In my opinion, they should have used the orange-citrus marinade to create a vinaigrette, as this salad was dry without it.
The Final Say
First things first, you probably want to know how all the prices of these companies compare. Blue Apron and Hello Fresh only allow you to choose three meals per week, whereas Plated and Home Chef let you choose as many meals as you want. Plated however, has a minimum of 4 plates. Home Chef has no minimum of meals, but you will pay $10.00 for shipping if you do not meet a $40.00 total. Below is a chart of prices for a box of three dinners for 2 people, avoiding all the minimums, shipping fees and choices, so that you can have a relative comparison.
| Company Name | Prices: Three meals for 2 people |
| Blue Apron | $59.94 |
| Hello Fresh *
|
$69.00 (omnivores)
$59.00 (herbivores) |
| Plated | $72.00 |
| Home Chef | $59.70 |
*Prices have been raised since June 2015 when this review was written. Prices were updated March 2016 *
Now for each of these, I used promotional codes that were offered to new subscribers. If you are interested in trying one or all of these companies, I would suggest liking them on Facebook to receive their promotions. Also you can search for these codes online. If you do not want to continue your service, remember to cancel your subscription so that your account is not charged each week. Each service allows you to skip weeks so that you are able to control what you are eating and how often a box arrives.
As far as calories go, Plated and Blue Apron boast meals in the range of 550-700 calories per serving. However, Hello Fresh had two of three meals in the 800-calorie range (click the blue name to see the meals) . From the Home Chef meals that I selected (see above photos), the range of calories was 510 to 677. Yet, when looking online at all the options, there were recipes in the 900-1000 calorie range.
Home Chef allows you to choose from 11 recipes, including one breakfast, and Plated has you choose from 8 recipes including an $18-$24 Chef’s Table special. With these two companies, you have more of a variety to choose from. Blue Apron offers 6 recipes for a 2-Person Plan and 4 for a Family Plan. Hello Fresh offers 5 recipes for the Classic Box and 3 for the Veggie Box.
Taste-wise, Hello Fresh and Home Chef were phenomenal. However, for Hello Fresh I chose Fried Won Tons and Swedish Meatballs, both unhealthy options. They were extremely flavorful and exciting to make, but as a health conscious foodie, I would not make those decisions every week. Furthermore, Home Chef allowed me to choose low-calorie meals that were delicious! We savored each bite and enjoyed the guilt-free meals. I was impressed at how flavorful the Thai Fish Cakes were, given that the meal was only 521 calories! When we ate our Blue Apron meals, we threw out the Rice and Beans and only ate half of the Jambalaya. They were flavorless. Still overall, Blue Apron had the most unique ingredients, which was a perk for a foodie like me. To see all the meals we cooked and tasted click on the company’s name: Plated, Blue Apron and Hello Fresh.
My final ruling is that Home Chef is a worthy contender to Blue Apron, Plated and Hello Fresh. Not only is it the most affordable of the four companies, Home Chef offers the most recipes and dietary options. Additionally, Home Chef includes a breakfast, smoothie and fruit basket option that no other company offers. Home Chef also offers gluten-free and dairy-free subscriptions. When I asked Blue Apron and Plated about this, both said that their ingredients are prepared in facility that stores and processes items containing gluten. They also said to use your best judgment when selecting meals. Hello Fresh did not reply. Overall, Home Chef’s meals were excellent and healthy. The runner up is Hello Fresh (click to read full review).
Now the choice is up to you. If you are in a good food mood and want to be pampered, let one of these food delivery services cater to your needs. Please post questions, pictures or comments, I love knowing about your experiences!

My husband has to closely monitor sodium intake. Did any of the services you reviewed include sodium content in their menu nutrition info? The nutritional label info available to nonmembers on Plated’s web site included sodium but the other services did not. I thought members might be provided with more nutritional detail than what is on the website/

Yes, they do include a sodium count. The meal I prepared tonight was the spinach & tomato stuff chicken breast. 850 sodium content.

Are all of the companies supplying meats that are anti-biotic and hormone free or even organic as well as from humane farms? Thanks!
LikeLike
I just received word back from Home Chef with an inquiry about the meats: “While our products are occasionally organic and hormone free, that’s something we can’t guarantee at this time.”
IMO, antibiotic free and hormone free is no brainer with a service such as this- I am hoping that they will get on board and use suppliers that are natural. Plated states: ” we use 100% domestic and sustainably sourced seafood, 100% antibiotic-free meats with no added hormones, ”
I have emails into both Hello Fresh and Blue Apron as well.

I signed up to Blue Apron about a month ago and have had three weeks of deliveries. So far everything has been very good. I like to cook but tend to make the same things all the time. I’m now cooking with ingredients and preparing meals that I would never consider. This is a big plus for me because it automatically introduces you to combining new and flavorful dishes. This is my first experience with these types of home delivery food services. It sounds like Home Chef has more options, which at some point I will try.
The one thing that makes me extremely uncomfortable is the lack of customer service at Blue Apron. As I read other customers posts on line, like Facebook, I see that many people have problems contacting them. No one every answer the customer service line, it’s always a automatied recording to leave a message. They are also very slow in responding to email. Could be several days or even a week or two before you hear back. Although I have had no issues so far with Blue Apron, the lack of attention to customer service and ability to speak with someone when needed is unsettling.

I have had HelloFresh now for about 6 weeks, and I have to say I have been really happy with it. The delivery is always when its scheduled, the food has always been packaged really well and is still cold (I live in Phoenix where it is still 104 in October), and the recipes give a good variety but arent too complex for my basic palate.
What got me started was this code that they give out: SBFSLX that took $40 off my first order. That let me try a full food box of 6 meals for only $29 instead of $69 which helped me decide if it was worth it. The code is still good, and worth using if you are thinking of trying it out.

I ordered Home Chef and the next day I received a special offer for $30 off my first order. I reached out to them and expressed that I was unhappy to receive an offer AFTER I placed my first order, so they knocked $40 off my following week. I think that’s great service. The food arrived nice and cold in good packaging and everything looks fresh. I will need to be careful and order the lower calorie dinners bc one of my recipes is a whopping 911 calories!! Yikes! So far so good with this company.

Excellent review. I’ve been using Blue Apron and really liking it for the variety it brings to our meals, the ease and especially the lack of having to think, plan and shop. My one complaint was not addressed in your review; the overuse of packaging. I get that they need to make sure the food stays cold but it’s just way too much for me. I wish there was an option for “I’ll be home within a half day; please go light on the packaging and frozen goop”. Did you notice any measurable difference in packing materials from the other three companies?
LikeLike
Hmmm…now that I think back to the packaging, I do not recall any major differences. The thing I remember is when it thaws out, the ice packs might have a film of goop. But what I did notice is that they all used frozen gel packs instead of “real” ice packs of frozen water. We kept some of them in our freezer for other uses, which was nice.

As a single woman who lives alone, these do-it -yourself home delivery meals are a life saver. It’s incredibly hard to cook for one person and often times, I throw leftovers out because I’m sick of eating off of them for more than two days or I have food that gets freezer burned because I don’t need the full portion at the time I’m cooking that particular meal. Then there is the money spent grocery shopping or getting take out. I’ve spent $80.00 at the grocery store on ingredients for just one meal……not good!
So far I’m a member of Home Chef, Hello Fresh, Blue Apron and Peach Dish. Hands down to Home Chef as far as variety of foods and a better range of calories. As someone who struggles to gain weight, I don’t always want low calorie meals. Home Chef offers both low calorie and high calorie and I love it.

I just browsed their site a little. I like how it lists the price of each meal, but I think $14.50/person for chicken tacos is pretty pricey!

Thanks for your great review! I was a member of Blue Apron for about a year and I really loved them. They definitely had very creative recipes with lots of exotic ingredients. I really enjoyed trying new foods every week. I also had no problem with their customer service. I once got a piece of fish that was “off” and they gladly comped me the entire meal, which was more than fair.
Unfortunately, though, some of “those people that I live with” (aka my family) are picky eaters and were less enthusiastic about some meals. I tried out Home Chef about six months ago and switched over to them. Their meals are very good, if not quite as exotic, and the ability to choose among the different recipes each week really helped.
As a working woman I find it incredibly helpful to know that everything that I need to make a great meal is waiting for me when I get home. I really enjoy cooking now!

We are empty nesters and in the food “rut” as well. We signed up for Blue Apron about three months ago. One very important area not yet written about is the health issue. My spouse and I are “fit” compared to others in our locale (maybe 20-25lbs over our ideal weight) and we were eating “healthy” meals. There was an unexpected surprise that came in the box with the food; we are both losing weight (both of us are down about 12lbs at this point) and not starving to accomplish that. We didn’t have that in mind when we started this but we are both flabbergasted. As I said, we are fit and not unhappy with the extra weight but to have it disappear without any effort is just amazing. We are certainly no longer in a “rut” as the meals have us using ingredients we never would have used previously.

We started out w BA & it was fun at first, but they do not invest much money into the meals they send you. They rarely offer steaks etc and when they do, they pair it with 2 cheaper meals that you have to pay for. They apparently use the money you pay them on advertising, instead of your next meals.
Home chef offers steak, salmon, pork… every week and you can pick whatever you want. They do not force any meals on you. You really get your money’s worth!

I have been getting HOME CHEF meals for 7 weeks now and I am so over the moon excited. There was only one meal out of 27 that I did not like, I only gave it 2 stars (chicken broccoli take out, it was fine but boring and I’m very picky). Otherwise 20 percent have been good, 40 percent have been great and 40 percent have been excellent. I am a busy woman at night, I play soccer twice a week, coach during the fall, belong to a book club, and go out with friends often. Finding the time to shop, plan meals, cook is difficult and mentally taxing. Home Chef has saved me. My husband is gluten free and what was a challenge before, has now become a cake walk. I order 3-4 meals each week depending on our schedule. My husband and I meet in the kitchen at 6:00 and we are eating by 6:30 with no issues. I freeze all the meat when it arrives and just put the rest in the crisper. Each day I pull out the meat choice and I don’t have to give it any more thought than that. I love this service!!! I am waiting for this to hit Florida because I want my parents to use it. How wonderful would that be for a retired couple!! I looked at other services but didn’t see as much gluten free and my mom could really benefit from a gluten free diet.

I’ve now been using Home Chef for a few months now and I still love it. I’ve seen comments about calories and portion size that I don’t quite understand. You can look at the calories in each meal before ordering, so they’re very transparent. There are meals that come thru that are over 1000 calories, but they offer 9-10 options each week, so they’re easily avoidable. I agree that the protein sizes aren’t huge (with exception to the pork tenderloin.. it’s a lot of meat for 2), but they’re enough and they definitely compensate with veggies. As far as portion sizes, I think I’ve only had 1 meal where I wasn’t satisfied and they usually stuff me, and I’m a very healthy eater.
The link below will give you $30 off and free shipping on your first order, if you want to give it a try. I was in a cooking slump and really do enjoy having meals picked for me. It’s really nice that they tell you everything that’s in their meals, so you can recreate them. I’m taking a couple weeks off right now to re-cook a few of my favorites from past weeks.

I have tried my first delivery service which is Hello Fresh. I have had a horrible experience with recipes that are bland and produce arrived past the date of being edible. I’m sure every box is different, but taking spinach out of the box and seeing green mush in a plastic bag is not economical for me. I’ve had to replace several fresh items. Just wanted to add my experience from Iowa.

Honestly, the time is pretty much cut in half compared to making a meal from scratch. Everything is portioned out. You may have to slice an onion or chop a mushroom or two. But spices and broths, for example are ready to be used. This is still a cooking experience with fresh ingredients, so there will be more prep than making boxed pasta for example. Each meal time is listed on the recipe card and online before you buy it. Some took 15 minutes and others 35. None of the meals I cooked took too long. All in all it takes less work than going grocery shopping and doing it from scratch. Hope that helps!
